Camdeboo National Park

Camdeboo National Park covers an awe-inspiring landscape of ancient rocks, of vast and timeless Karoo landscapes. While here, explore a wildlife refuge on the shores of a picturesque lake. Situated on the outskirts of the charming and quaint town of Graaff-Reinet, in the crown of the Great Karoo, you’re experience the tranquility of nature seldom found elsewhere.

Camdeboo National Park, which covers over 19 000 hectares, is most famous for its Valley of Desolation, a declared national monument. The viewpoints at the valley provide a breathtaking view of piled dolerite columns against the backdrop of the Great Karoo plains.

While visiting the Park, be sure to do some game viewing. Buffalo and antelope roam the area surrounding the Nqweba Dam, while smaller mammals such as caracal, bat-eared and Cape fox, meerkat and scrub hare are also found in the Park. Birding enthusiasts could spot at least 225 bird species throughout the Park.

Three 4×4 trails offer spectacular scenic views over the landscape. And for the not-so-adventurous, a number of hiking trails varying in length from 1.5km to 14km will get you closer to the fauna and flora within the Park. Six picnic sites placed throughout the Park offer a place for visitors to relax in a natural setting, while the Nqweba Dam provides cool relief during hot summer days and a base for a variety of water activities (permit fees apply and own equipment must be provided).

The Lakeview Tented Camp and the Nqweba Campsite offer a rustic overnight nature experience on the floodplains of the Nqweba Dam.
